U.S. Steel Great Lakes Works, a fully integrated steel producer located in SE Michigan, is seeking candidates for a Shift Manager Utilities Maintenance position. This position is responsible for supervising production and quality activities performed by maintenance crews of the Utilities Department as they support the maintenance, inspection and repair activities at the power houses, the turbo-blowers, pumps, boilers, water treatment facilities, steam and electrical services.
Responsibilities include:
Administration of the U. S. Steel safety program to ensure a safe work environment and safe work practices. Promotes safety by various means (safety contacts, safety tours, incident investigations and follow-up, MSDS and JSA review, equipment condition, etc.) and leads by example.
Ensures adherence to all environmental control procedures and relevant codes and standards.
Supervises union represented hourly workforce and coordinates all administrative activities pertaining to that responsibility (i.e. performance reviews and related documentation, attendance and conduct administration, annual surveillance medicals, etc.). Actively participates in recruitment screening and selection of prospective new hires.
Performs administrative activities such as scheduling and paying employees, completing maintenance reports, conducting safety conversations, and compiling other reporting as required.
Leads mechanical techs and electrical techs, in support of equipment repairs including welding, pipefitting, rigging, motor and wiring repair.
Assist and support production units in reaching quality, delay and yield goals/targets.
Communicates, directs and facilitates the overall operation of the facility. Builds constructive relationships. Ensures accountability, engages employees, promotes teamwork and responsibility to improve employee morale. Requires strong leadership. Ensures consistent productivity and cost.
Positions require working a rotating shift work schedule.
Requirements:
Associates degree in engineering, technology or equivalent required.
Bachelors in manufacturing or technology preferred.
3-5 years working experience in a steel or like heavy industry and maintenance supervisory experience.
Supervision and management of a unionized workforce.
Able to read prints, line diagrams, schematics, and process flow diagrams.
Must have good computer and communication skills.
